Bios can be kind of boring, can't they?
It's easy to fill the space with awards and credentials, but I'd rather try to give you a glimpse of the real stuff. If you bought me a coffee and asked me to share some of my story, here are some of the things I might say.
There are many words I could use to describe myself. I'm a husband, a Dad, a poet and a speaker.
I’ve got a couple of expensive degrees that would suggest I cared more about the subject matter than the job prospects (English and Philosophy majors???) When I was in High School a friend burnt me a Tupac CD which changed my life. I set out to become the greatest rapper alive…and became a spoken word poet by accident along the way.
I've been performing poetry for over a decade now, everywhere from backyards to bookshops, libraries to prisons, schools to theatres. A while ago I started a creative business called Lead by Story. I think of it like a creative playground where I get to make stuff with my amazing friends who are filmmakers, artists, composers and communicators.
I'm an Enneagram 7 and I have a habit of starting more new things than would be conventionally considered 'sensible'. I make books, podcasts and short films, I give talks and run workshops and I direct a few creative events here and there as well. Most of the time I'm not thinking ten steps ahead; I'm just chasing the idea that has captured my curiosity at the current point in time. So far this is working out better than I would have expected.
I have no social media strategy and don’t spend much time thinking about marketing. I figure things out by trying them and inevitably make mistakes along the way. I’m not trying to build an empire and on my best days I embrace the wisdom of my last name: there is nothing wrong with being small. I spend most of my energy making stuff and chatting enthusiastically about it to people who end up within earshot.
For the sake of my sons, I’m deeply invested in creating more space in our culture for emotionally healthy masculinity.
For the sake of our community, I’m deeply invested in teaching more people to write poetry.
For the sake of my inner child, I’m trying to live from a place of wonder, curiosity and trust.
If you've taken the time to read this, I hope there is something within my work that resonates with you.
I'm always up for a chat. I'd love to hear from you. So don't be shy - feel free to drop me a message. Maybe we could even grab that coffee?

"The first time I heard Will speak I sat wide-eyed leaning forward with my mouth ajar! Nothing much has changed because his words smack of truth, heart and sober reality. Each time Will does his thing the crowd is right there with him; present - lingering in the moment. Lights switch on when Will gives complex ideas about social justice, faith and politics his poetic spin."
